BBC journalist spots what Man Utd fans did to Toffees ace

Everton defender Ashley Young was given a warm welcome from the Manchester United fans at Old Trafford.

That is according to BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone, who made the observation when the player came on in the 75th minute of the match on Saturday (9 March).

The Red Devils won the Premier League clash 2-0, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford each scoring penalties.

“It was good to see Ashley Young getting a warm welcome from the Old Trafford faithful,” Stone wrote for BBC Sport. “A former team-mate of Jonny Evans’, Young was part of Manchester United’s 2012-13 Premier League title-winning squad.

“Young also won the Europa League, the FA Cup and EFL Cup during his time as a United player. No-one could ever accuse him of failing to give his best.”

Young boasts a fantastic history with Manchester United, with the Old Trafford faithful unsurprisingly paying their respects to the veteran when he entered the pitch late on.

The defender did his best to have an impact on the scoreline, but by then the hosts had already done the damage, with Young’s teammates James Tarkowski and Ben Godfrey having given away spot-kicks in Manchester.

The former Old Trafford ace was one of five changes made by Sean Dyche throughout the match, but none had quite the impact he was expecting.

The visitors certainly had plenty of chances to find the back of the net themselves, but their attackers couldn’t take them, much to the frustration of Dyche.

The manager has done a fine job in the Goodison Park dugout, but he is rapidly running out of time to pick up points this season.

The latest defeat leaves the Toffees sitting 16th in the Premier League table, dangerously close to the relegation zone.
