Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has made a promise in terms of the DStv Premiership title race, with the Buccaneers determined to make it an interesting one in the final few months of the season.

Mamelodi Sundowns are cruising to a seventh consecutive title, with a 13-point lead at the summit and two games in hand over second-placed Pirates.

It would take a collapse of epic proportions for Sundowns to let the title slip from their hands, but Pirates are not ready to throw in the towel, as long as there is still a mathematical chance.

“Look, one thing I know is that we will fight until it’s officially over and we can’t win it. We want to challenge and we are going to challenge. We go into every game wanting to get all three points. Sometimes it does not happen, but it’s up to us to pick ourselves up and go again. As far as the league goes, we want it so badly. Eventually it will come,” Mabasa said to the Siya crew.

Pirates have a more realistic chance of winning the Nedbank Cup, a title they are defending this season after they overcame Sekhukhune United in the final last year. After beating ABC Motsepe League side Crystal Lake in the last 32, they face Motsepe Foundation Championship side Hungry Lions on home soil on Saturday, eager to edge themselves closer to the final.

The Buccaneers have handled lower division opponents quite well in the past and are definitely favourites to advance.

“It’s going to be a difficult game. It’s always tricky playing against a lower division team because you never know what to expect. Look at Dondol Stars and how they managed to play last season. It’s always tricky, but we will prepare as best as we can, and we will stick to what we believe in and play or football and hopefully we will pull through on the day and put our names in the hat for the next round.”
