KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WNCN) – A 17-year-old is facing murder charges in connection to the death of a woman who was shot on her front porch in Knightdale in November 2023, according to police.

Knightdale police officers responded to a shots fired call on the 600 block of Twain Town Drive on Nov. 8. When officers arrived on scene, they found a home riddled with bullets and found the victim, later identified as 40-year-old Shinaka Ocean Earth, struck by gunfire while sitting on her front porch, police said.

Earth was pronounced dead at the scene, despite life-saving measures by first responders, according to Knightdale police.

Police said investigators presented their findings earlier this week to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, and prosecutors decided to charge the juvenile with one open count of murder.

“From the beginning, this case demanded a meticulous and calculated approach,” Knightdale Chief of Police Lawrence Capps said in a released statement. “Perseverance, teamwork, and cooperation played a key role in the investigation. We cannot undo this senseless act of violence, but we are grateful to be able to begin the process of bringing closure for the victim’s family.”

The suspect is currently being held in a juvenile detention facility on a secured custody order. Knightdale police said the investigation is still active as detectives continue to pursue leads and identify additional suspects.
