On Sunday, a landslide in the Marra Mountains, a remote area, left a death toll of no less than 1,000, at least, is the point on which the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), a rebel group, is unanimous.
The area had been drenched with incessant rains for a few days, and it was in the following time that the disaster occurred in Tarasin village. The rebels said that the landslide had eaten up almost the entire village and so far only one survivor has been found.
They also posted a letter addressed to the United Nations and other international bodies asking for their help.
Most of those who died were the people of North Darfur state who are the ones that had moved to the Marra Mountains area to escape the long war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been involved in a civil war that has led to the massive displacement of people and the creation of a severe humanitarian crisis.
It is believed that the war has made about 12 million people leave their homes. According to the US officials, the number of the dead in the conflict is put at 150,000 people, which is the maximum figure since the outbreak of the fighting.
The disaster site is partly in the area controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), who have declared their support to the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) against the RSF in the conflict that has led to the greatest suffering of the region of western Darfur.
