World14 Fatalities Reported in Ukraine, Russia Following Weekend Strikes

Officials in Ukraine and Russia reported at least 14 deaths on Sunday following a series of missile and drone attacks. Ukrainian authorities said Russian strikes targeted several cities, including the capital, Kyiv, while Russian officials reported Ukrainian attacks on Russian-controlled territory and a city near the border.

Ukraine’s air force stated that Russia had launched seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones across the country overnight. The attacks targeted cities including Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia.

In the northern city of Chernihiv, Ukrainian officials said a Russian drone strike on a supermarket killed two people, including a nine-year-old girl, and wounded 25 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the event as a “deeply cynical drone strike on an ordinary supermarket.”

In the eastern city of Kharkiv, the local mayor reported that one person was killed and 16 others were injured after a drone attack. In a separate statement, Zelenskyy called the Kharkiv attack “deliberate Russian terror with absolutely no military justification.”

In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said a glide bomb attack killed one person and wounded six. Ukraine’s national oil and gas company, Naftogaz, also announced that two of its employees died in an attack in Sloviansk, in the Donetsk region, while assisting residents affected by a previous strike.

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said an overnight missile attack caused a fire in a multi-story apartment building, wounding three people.

On the same day, Russian-installed officials in the occupied part of Ukraine’s Donetsk region reported casualties from Ukrainian attacks. Ivan Prikhodko, the Russian-installed mayor of Horlivka, said a Ukrainian drone strike killed four civilians. He later stated that another drone hit an emergency vehicle, injuring three medics and one resident.

In the Russian city of Belgorod, near the Ukrainian border, Russian authorities reported that a Ukrainian drone attack injured at least 12 people, including two children.

Both Moscow and Kyiv deny targeting civilians in the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. According to the United Nations, civilian casualty rates have increased in 2026. The U.N. reported 1,396 civilian deaths and 7,978 injuries in Ukraine in the first six months of the year. In Russia, it recorded 250 civilian deaths and 1,596 injuries in the same period. Analysts have attributed the rise to the increased use of short-range drones, glide bombs, and intensified strikes on infrastructure by both sides.
