NIGERIA — Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised alarm over Nigeria’s worsening poverty levels, warning that the country is on the brink of a major crisis if immediate steps are not taken to address the issue.
Education as a Key to Ending Poverty
Speaking during the Dele Momodu Leadership Lecture on May 16, 2025, titled “How to End Hunger and Poverty in Africa,” Obasanjo emphasized the critical role of education in breaking the cycle of poverty. He noted that quality education is essential for economic growth and development, arguing that without it, poverty becomes inevitable.
According to Obasanjo, if China could lift 700 million people out of extreme poverty, Nigeria should have no excuse to remain impoverished.
Leadership and Integrity as Crucial Ingredients
Obasanjo highlighted the importance of effective leadership in addressing poverty. He argued that integrity, discipline and good governance are critical for achieving sustainable development. He stressed that leaders must prioritize the welfare of their people, ensuring that no child is left uneducated.
“Leadership is the greatest ingredient for ending poverty,” he said, adding that every human endeavor thrives on strong leadership.
Urgency for Swift Action
Warning of the potential dangers of inaction, Obasanjo described the current situation as akin to “sitting on kegs of gunpowder.” He urged immediate, coordinated efforts to tackle poverty, cautioning that failure to act swiftly could result in severe social and economic unrest. (Vanguard report)
Call for National Responsibility
Obasanjo also called for collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to work together to eliminate poverty. He stressed that the responsibility to end poverty should not rest solely on the government but should involve every sector of society.
“If we don’t take responsibility, we all sit on a gunpowder keg,” he warned.
Reactions from Other Leaders
The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, supported Obasanjo’s call for action, emphasizing the need for patriotism and local economic support. He urged Nigerians to prioritize local products and industries to boost economic stability.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State echoed Obasanjo’s sentiments, calling for more accessible and responsive leadership. He stressed that political leaders must remain in touch with the people’s realities to effectively address their challenges.
Obasanjo’s remarks come at a critical time as Nigeria grapples with rising economic challenges, widespread hardship and growing calls for comprehensive reforms to tackle poverty.
