N’DJAMENA, CHAD — Former Prime Minister and opposition leader Succès Masra was arrested early Friday, May 16, 2025, at his residence in the Gassi district of N’Djamena. Masra, who leads the Transformers party, is accused of inciting hatred following deadly clashes in Logone-Occidental, a southwestern region of the country (Africanews).

Background to the Arrest

Chadian judicial authorities said the arrest stems from violence that erupted on May 14 during a land dispute between herders and local communities. At least 41 people were killed and more than 80 detained. Prosecutor Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye claimed that Masra played a role in escalating the violence, citing social media messages that allegedly urged citizens to arm themselves.

Party Response and Legal Concerns

The Transformers party denounced the arrest, calling it a violation of Masra’s political rights. In a statement, Secretary General Dr. Tog-Yeum Nagorngar described the move as a “brutal action” conducted outside legal norms. The party demanded Masra’s immediate and unconditional release, stating its continued commitment to peaceful civic engagement.

Wider Political Context

Masra, a staunch critic of President Mahamat Déby, finished second in the country’s most recent election. His arrest has drawn international attention and stoked fears of rising political repression in Chad, a country grappling with chronic instability, economic hardship, and tensions between the ruling government and opposition leaders.
