Rwanda Approves Bilateral Air Service Agreements with 15 Countries to Enhance Global Connectivity

BusinessRwanda Approves Bilateral Air Service Agreements with 15 Countries to Enhance Global Connectivity

RWANDA — On Oct. 20, 2023, the Rwandan Cabinet, chaired by President Paul Kagame, approved the ratification of bilateral air service agreements (BASAs) with 15 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas. The countries included are Antigua and Barbuda, Austria, Bangladesh, Barbados, Colombia, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Latvia, the Maldives, Malta, Mauritania, New Zealand, Saint Lucia and Venezuela.

These BASAs are intended to facilitate air transport services between Rwanda and each respective country, with the goal of boosting the movement of passengers, cargo, exports and imports. The agreements are part of Rwanda’s strategy to deepen business ties and encourage tourism with these nations.

Rwanda has actively expanded its network of air service agreements in recent years to strengthen its aviation sector and global connectivity. Prior to this approval, Rwanda had signed BASAs with 107 countries: 49 in Africa, 24 in Europe, 19 in Asia and the Middle East, and 15 in the Americas. The addition of these 15 agreements brings the total to 122, underscoring Rwanda’s commitment to becoming more integrated into the international aviation network.

According to The New Times, this expansion aligns with Rwanda’s broader economic and diplomatic goals, including its participation in the Single African Air Transport Market, which aims to liberalize air transport across the continent.

The ratification of these agreements is expected to increase air traffic between Rwanda and its new partners, opening the door for new flight routes operated by RwandAir and other carriers. This development is projected to support Rwanda’s economic growth by facilitating trade, tourism and cultural exchange.

As the country continues to pursue similar agreements, its aviation sector is positioned to play a growing role in national economic development and international engagement.
