DETROIT — Ford Motor Co. posted a 16.3% increase in U.S. vehicle sales for May 2025, fueled by strong demand for combustion and hybrid models amid ongoing national pricing promotions.
The company reported a 17.2% year-over-year rise in gasoline-powered vehicle sales and a nearly 29% surge in hybrid sales, which helped offset a 25% decline in electric vehicle sales compared to May 2024. The drop includes a slowdown in demand for the electric F-150 Lightning.
Ford attributed much of its recent momentum to its “From America, For America” employee pricing program, launched in March and continuing through the Fourth of July holiday.
“Ford’s ‘From America, For America’ employee pricing program continues to connect with customers and drive strong sales results,” a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
The promotion began shortly after the Trump administration implemented a new 25% tariff on imported vehicles in April. In May, Ford raised prices on select vehicles assembled in Mexico, attributing the adjustments to seasonal factors and tariff-related costs. The price changes applied to units built after May 2.
Analysts say the anticipation of price increases spurred consumer activity in late March and early April, helping boost second-quarter sales across the industry.
According to Cox Automotive, May’s seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) was estimated at 16 million units—up slightly from May 2024, though below the 17.8 million and 17.3 million recorded in March and April, respectively. Cox projected a 3.2% increase in total May sales volume compared to a year ago, and a 2.5% rise over April, aided by one extra selling day.
Ford’s strong May results mark the third consecutive month of double-digit year-over-year sales growth, positioning the automaker as a standout performer during a volatile period shaped by shifting consumer preferences, regulatory changes, and pricing strategies.
According to CNBC, while Ford’s EV segment faces headwinds, its hybrid and traditional models continue to attract American buyers amid a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
