UGANDA — On June 3, 2025, Ugandan security forces intercepted two individuals suspected of planning an attack near the Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine in Kampala. The suspects—a man and a woman traveling on a motorcycle—were approached by authorities when an explosion occurred, killing both. No civilian casualties were reported.

Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba addressed the incident publicly, assuring citizens that the situation was under control and emphasizing the importance of public vigilance. “We urge everyone to remain calm and report any suspicious activity,” Byakagaba said.

According to Nile Post, preliminary investigations suggest the suspects had links to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group with roots in Uganda and current operations in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The ADF has been connected to multiple attacks in Uganda, including coordinated bombings in Kampala in November 2021.

The explosion occurred on Martyrs’ Day, a national holiday commemorating the execution of Christian converts between 1885 and 1887. The Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine, where the incident occurred, is a key location for the annual observance. Despite the blast, celebrations at the Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine continued as planned, with President Yoweri Museveni and other dignitaries in attendance.

Security forces quickly secured the area around Munyonyo, launching a full investigation. Officials are gathering evidence to determine the nature of the attack and the exact involvement of the ADF.

The swift intervention by authorities likely prevented a greater tragedy during a widely attended public event. The incident underscores ongoing security concerns in Uganda and highlights the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups operating across East Africa.
