The United Nations General Assembly has elected the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Liberia as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term. The election took place at the UN Headquarters in New York City, where DRC received 183 votes and Liberia secured 181 votes from member states.

During their upcoming tenure, the two nations will join Somalia to form the “A3,” the bloc representing the African Group on the Council.

African Union Commission’s Response
The African Union Commission (AUC) welcomed the results, with Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf congratulating both nations. He emphasized that the election reflects the international community’s confidence in their ability to contribute to global peace and security. Youssouf also underlined the importance of their roles in championing the African Union’s positions within the Council.

Historical Context and Significance
Liberia’s election marks a significant return to the Council after more than six decades, having last served a partial term in 1961. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai called the election a historic milestone and praised the generations that upheld Liberia’s principles of freedom and self-governance. The DRC, meanwhile, returns to the Council after its last term ended in 1991.

Role and Responsibilities
As part of the A3, DRC, Liberia, and Somalia are expected to coordinate efforts to represent African interests and perspectives within the Security Council. Their responsibilities will include engaging in high-level discussions and decisions on matters of international peace and security, while also advocating for positions aligned with the African Union’s strategic objectives.

The African Union Commission has pledged its full support to the elected nations, aiming to help ensure effective representation and participation throughout their term.

Election Process
The election was part of the UN’s regular rotation for non-permanent seats on the 15-member Security Council, which includes five permanent members and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms. Alongside DRC and Liberia, Bahrain, Colombia, and Latvia were also elected to serve during the 2026–2027 term.

Final Thoughts
The election of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia to the UN Security Council underscores continued efforts to ensure equitable and diverse representation in global decision-making. Their participation is expected to strengthen the Council’s engagement on African peace and security priorities while contributing to broader international diplomacy.

According to Asia News Network, this development is seen as a win not only for Liberia and the DRC but for the continent’s role in shaping global policy.
