Charges Dropped Against Farm Worker in South African Pig-Sty Murder Case

PoliticsCharges Dropped Against Farm Worker in South African Pig-Sty Murder Case

A prosecutor in South Africa decided to take back the charges that were filed against 20-year-old farm worker Adrian Rudolph de Wet. The young man is said to have killed two women at a pig farm in Limpopo Province in August 2024.

Through his assistance to the officials, he was relieved from the charges and he will become the state’s witness.

The matter refers to the killing of Lucia Ndlovu, 34, and Maria Makgato, 45, through shootings on August 17, 2024. It has been proposed that the women were killed whilst searching for food at the farm, and their lifeless bodies were found in a pigsty a few days later.

Three men were at first hand arrested: de Wet, farm owner Zachariah Johannes Olivier, 60, and employee William Musrora, 50. They were all in trouble with the law on charges of murder, attempted murder, and obstruction of justice. In his testimony, De Wet claimed that Olivier commanded him to get rid of the corpses by feeding the pigs with them.

Olivier and Musrora are still being held in jail and are charged with several counts among which are; premeditated murder, attempted murder, possession of an unlawful firearm, and obstruction of justice. In addition, Musrora is also being charged with violations of immigration laws.

The matter is one of the main headlines both locally and internationally and has attracted an array of protests as well as discussions about the racial disparity, land utilization, and the working conditions of rural communities in South Africa.

The Economic Freedom Fighters party has demanded that the farm be subjected to various sanctions, including a ban on its pork products. The trial is still going on at Limpopo High Court.
