Congo Forms New Cabinet Amid Intensifying Eastern Security Crisis

PoliticsCongo Forms New Cabinet Amid Intensifying Eastern Security Crisis

The president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has announced a new government on August 8, 2025, which still includes Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka. The new cabinet has 54 members, which is one less than the previous one formed in May, and the composition sees the incorporation of the opposition leader, Adolphe Muzito, as the vice prime minister responsible for budget matters.

Overall, this cabinet reshuffling is considered as an effort to get the country united nationally while the conflict in the eastern region is escalating. The M23 rebel group has been able to take a lot of land under their control and, what is more, has continued to be the major security threat to the government’s authority.

The peace process has been obstructed since the scheduled talks in Doha did not take place because of the non-issuance of the appropriate invitations. According to the government, M23 violated a June truce, thus signaling the delicate nature of the diplomatic efforts in progress.

The violence in Eastern DRC goes on and has severe consequences for the local people. The United Nations found that at least 319 civilians were killed in the Rutshuru area in July, indicating one of the deadliest months since the comeback of M23.

The conflict has been prolonged to the point that most of the residents in eastern DRC have been displaced. The international community’s eye is on the going down of the humanitarian crisis and political turmoil in this area, which is of great strategic significance to the central part of Africa.
