African Union Urges South Sudan to Implement Permanent Ceasefire and Peace Accord

PoliticsAfrican Union Urges South Sudan to Implement Permanent Ceasefire and Peace Accord

The African Union Peace and Security Council has made a strong call to the South Sudan transitional government and the armed opposition groups for the implementation of the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan in their entirety.

The council, at a meeting in Addis Ababa on August 15, 2025, made this appeal while lamenting the delays that have resulted in the peace process.

The 2018 revitalized peace accord, which put an end to the war that raged from 2013 was brokered by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

The deal settled the power-sharing arrangements, security sector reforms, and identified the modalities for armed forces to be integrated into one national army.

On the other hand, progress towards meeting the significant requirements has been slow with the unification of armed groups as the most affected issue.

The AU council indicated the need for political will on the part of all the parties involved as they speed up the implementation of their transitional security arrangements and governance reforms.

Although the ceasefire has been effective in most areas, there are reports of sporadic clashes and localized violence in different parts of the country.

The AU had earlier warned that if there are delays, the achievement of stability could be compromised, leading to the possibility of a return to the previous state of conflict.

The council appealed to regional and international partners to avail both the logistical and financial resources which are necessary for the peace process.

The AU affirmed that it would continue to coordinate with IGAD, the United Nations, and other key players in order to achieve sustainable peace in South Sudan.
