Four African Nations Face Critical Shortage of Therapeutic Food for Malnourished Children

PoliticsFour African Nations Face Critical Shortage of Therapeutic Food for Malnourished Children

“Save the Children” has announced on Thursday that therapeutic food, which can be used directly and is specially made for malnourished children, will be exhausted in Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan within three months.

The international aid organization said at least four African countries are running out of specialized life-saving food for severely malnourished children due to supply disruptions caused by cuts in aid.

The global collapse in nutrition funding has been preceded by predictions cutting off treatment for 15.6 million people in 18 countries: over 2.3 million severely malnourished children, in 2025.

“Doctors Without Borders” has informed that at least 652 malnourished children who died in its facilities in northern Nigeria in the first half of 2025 were due to the lack of timely care.

The funding for nutrition that is necessary for 2025 has only been attracted for 39%.

September has been pointed out as a critical period when most aid programs could be interrupted or reduced in their activities. The region requires 105,000 cartons of ready-to-use therapeutic food, but delivery accounts for only 77%.

The shortage is occurring while Africa is facing an increased number of displaced people, conflicts, and climate-driven emergencies that are exacerbating the continent’s food insecurity problems.
