Malaysia, being the ASEAN Chair for this year, shall be the venue for the ASEAN Ministers’ Meeting on Security in Melaka this September. The conference, as the main theme, would emphasize the fight against cross-border crime and cybercrime, and in its context, it would point out the growing concern for regional security.
Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail remarked that the meeting will revolve around the major corresponding themes of intelligence sharing, capacity building, and joint operations. He said that the point that no single country can tackle these issues alone is the main reason why the effort of the region as a whole is critically needed.
Throughout its chairmanship in the ASEAN for the year 2025, Malaysia has made the cooperation of security as its main priority and has therefore integrated it into the agenda of officer-level task forces and ministerial discussions. This is a testament to the country’s continuous efforts to deepen coordination in battling the border-crossing and digital threats.
From a political point of view, the summit hosting is an advantage for Malaysia as it will depict her as a main player of the ASEAN platform and testify to her leadership in molding a more stable and united bloc. The Melaka forum is expected to be an opportunity for the region to move forward in addressing issues relating to the improvement of laws and policies, strengthening cooperation in law enforcement, and unveiling innovative strategies to deal with both physical and cyber threats in the Southeast Asian area.
