On Saturday, floods caused a landslide that buried countless homes and damaged the main road that leads to the village, which left the population completely isolated from the rest of the world.

In order to make the long journey through the mountains to the disaster site, Save the Childrens’ emergency team did not hesitate to load the necessary supplies onto 6 donkeys.

Lanino reported that the team exhausted themselves in the difficult activity of descending the mountain and climbing it back again but was able to get food, water, hygiene articles, and tarpaulins for the victims.

He also said that they had found mud and stones in the middle of the road caused by people’s houses collapsing in the village.

The figures of the dead vary greatly, civil leaders have counted 370-375 bodies, while the ministry of health only confirmed 2 bodies, an estimate of 1000 dead people is as well given by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which is the authority controlling the area.

Thus the UN deputy humanitarian coordinator Antoine Gerard was giving the number of 370 deaths but emphasized the main problem to be the difficulty in getting the numbers as it is a very isolated place.

The Marra Mountains area has been the place where people were looking for protection against the tragic Sudan civil war which still keeps going for more than two years.

Alongside the local population, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported forced displacement of 150 people from Tarasin and the neighboring villages.

The landslide in the Marra Mountains area has turned into a devastating disaster that has left the area, already in a dire humanitarian situation, with families entirely without basic needs.

At least 21 different areas in the country have been affected by heavy rains and floods over the last few weeks.
