Coinbase Global, Inc. announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2023 on Thursday, reporting a net income of $2.2 million. The cryptocurrency exchange attributed the results to growth in both subscription services and transaction revenue, according to its quarterly shareholder letter released on November 2.
The reported profit marks a significant shift from the same period last year, when the company posted a net loss of $545 million. It also shows a sequential improvement from the second quarter of 2023, which ended with a net loss of $97 million.
According to the company’s Q3 2023 report, total revenue reached $674.1 million. This figure was composed of $334.4 million from subscription and services revenue and $327.3 million from transaction revenue. Subscription and services revenue, which includes income from blockchain rewards and interest, for the first time surpassed transaction revenue, which is generated from trading fees.
The report detailed that interest income was a primary component of the subscription and services category, totaling $221 million for the quarter. A substantial portion of this came from the company’s holdings backing the USDC stablecoin.
Total trading volume on the platform was $76 billion for the third quarter, a decrease from $92 billion in the previous quarter. Consumer trading volume was $11 billion, while institutional trading volume accounted for $65 billion. The company noted that while overall trading volume declined, transaction revenue increased due to a shift in the mix of assets being traded.
In its letter to shareholders, Coinbase addressed its operational strategy. “We are operating with a leaner cost structure, have strong financial discipline, and are focused on driving utility in crypto to unlock the next chapter of crypto adoption,” the company stated.
The results were released after the close of the U.S. stock market. The report provides a financial snapshot of one of the largest publicly traded cryptocurrency exchanges amid ongoing developments in the digital asset market and the broader regulatory environment.
