A series of events across the globe this past week underscored ongoing environmental challenges, the effects of armed conflict, and various public gatherings. News agencies documented scenes from a United Nations climate conference in Brazil, weather-related incidents in Asia and the Caribbean, and the human consequences of conflicts in Sudan and the Middle East.
In Belém, Brazil, the COP30 UN Climate Change Conference was underway. During a news conference, Indigenous leader and environmentalist Chief Raoni held a sign that read, “Climate emergency. The answer is us,” according to Agence France-Presse.
Environmental concerns were also prominent elsewhere. In Tehran, Iranian women gathered at the Saleh Shrine to pray for rain amid water shortages. According to AFP, officials in the capital warned of potential water supply interruptions, describing the situation as “the worst drought in decades.” In Bangladesh, river erosion along the Brahmaputra River in Kurigram displaced residents, including Kosim Uddin, 50, who was photographed by Reuters where his home once stood.
Extreme weather events directly impacted several nations. In the Philippines, heavy rainfall from Super Typhoon Fung-wong caused a river to breach its banks, submerging homes in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan province. In Haiti, a funeral was held in Petit Goave for individuals killed in a landslide caused by Hurricane Melissa, The Associated Press reported. In the hurricane’s aftermath, a Spanish field hospital in Falmouth, Jamaica, began accepting patients to support the country’s health services, according to the European Pressphoto Agency.
In regions affected by conflict, developments continued to unfold. In northern Sudan, Sudanese refugees who fled el-Fasher were observed at the al-Afad camp in al-Dabba. The conflict between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced nearly 12 million people, according to reports cited by AFP. The RSF captured el-Fasher last month.
In the Gaza Strip, burials were held in Deir el-Balah for unidentified Palestinians whose bodies were returned from Israel as part of a ceasefire agreement, AP reported.
Public gatherings for cultural and political reasons also took place. In Mexico City, protesters clashed with police during a demonstration. Separately, in Coscomatepec de Bravo, Veracruz state, participants took part in the National Dancing Masks Festival.
