U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that India has offered to eliminate tariffs on American goods, in a social media post where he also criticized the trade relationship between the two nations. The claims were made in a post on the Truth Social platform on September 1, 2025.
In his statement, Trump characterized the economic relationship as unbalanced. “What few people understand is that we do very little business with India, but they do a tremendous amount of business with us,” he wrote. “In other words, they sell us massive amounts of goods, their biggest ’client,’ but we sell them very little.”
Trump continued, stating that an offer had been made by New Delhi. “They have now offered to cut their Tariffs to nothing, but it’s getting late. They should have done so years ago,” he added.
The Indian government has not yet issued a public comment in response to Trump’s September 1 remarks.
The statement follows the recent U.S. imposition of tariffs of up to 50% on certain goods from India. In his post, Trump also commented on India’s international trade in other sectors.
“India buys most of its oil and military products from Russia, very little from the U.S.,” he wrote.
In response to previous U.S. tariff measures, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated the country’s position on its economic relationships. In a statement made prior to Trump’s most recent comments, Goyal said that New Delhi “will neither bow down nor ever appear weak.”
