Shipments of foreign-branded mobile phones in China rose by 128.4% in November compared to the same month last year, according to calculations based on data released Thursday by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).
The report from the government-affiliated research institute showed that shipments from foreign manufacturers reached approximately 8.36 million units in November. This figure contributed to a total of 32.5 million smartphones shipped in China during the month, which represents a 32.1% increase for the overall market year-over-year.
The data for November marks a change from the previous month. In October, CAICT data indicated a year-over-year decline in shipments for foreign-branded phones.
While the monthly CAICT report does not provide a breakdown of shipments by individual company, Apple Inc. is the primary foreign smartphone manufacturer with a significant market share in China. Other foreign brands have a smaller presence in the country’s market, which is largely comprised of domestic manufacturers such as Honor, Xiaomi, and Huawei.
The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology is a scientific research institute directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China. The organization regularly publishes data on the performance of the country’s mobile phone market, providing figures on overall shipments, the adoption of 5G technology, and the number of new models released.
According to the November report, domestic Chinese brands shipped 24.1 million units, accounting for the majority of the market for the month. The data reflects the total number of devices shipped from factories to retail and carrier channels, not final sales to consumers.
