BusinessGlobal AI Spending Projected to Reach $2.5 Trillion by 2026

Global corporate investment in artificial intelligence totaled $1.6 trillion between 2013 and 2024, according to a report from Stanford University. A separate forecast from the technology insights company Gartner projects that worldwide spending on AI will reach $2.5 trillion in 2026, reflecting sustained financial commitment to the sector from private and corporate sources.

The 2025 AI Index Report by Stanford University places the $1.6 trillion in historical investment into context by comparing the figure to the inflation-adjusted costs of several large-scale government projects. According to the report’s data, adjusted to 2024 U.S. dollars, these projects include the Manhattan Project at $36 billion, the International Space Station at $150 billion, the Apollo Program at $250 billion, and the U.S. Interstate Highway System at $620 billion.

The report notes that the funding for AI has primarily come from private markets, venture capital, and corporate research and development, distinct from the government-led financing of the historical projects cited.

A geographical breakdown of private AI investment from 2013 to 2024 provided in the Stanford report shows the United States as the leading country. U.S. companies invested $471 billion in the sector, funding 6,956 new AI companies. China was second with $119 billion invested across 1,605 startups, followed by the United Kingdom with $28 billion supporting 885 startups.

Other countries with significant private AI investment during this period include:
Canada: $15 billion (481 companies)
Israel: $15 billion (492 companies)
Germany: $13 billion (394 companies)
France: $11 billion (468 companies)
India: $11 billion (434 companies)

The report specifies these figures track corporate investments such as mergers, acquisitions, and private offerings, and do not include direct government subsidies like the U.S. CHIPS Act.

Looking ahead, the forecast from Gartner projects a continued increase in AI-related expenditures. The firm predicts that by 2026, total spending will reach $2.5 trillion, a 44 percent increase over its 2025 projection.

Gartner provided a breakdown of its 2026 spending forecast by category:

AI Infrastructure: $1.37 trillion
AI Services: $589 billion
AI Software: $452 billion
AI Cybersecurity: $51 billion
AI Platforms (Data Science/Machine Learning): $31 billion
AI Models: $26 billion
AI Application Development Platforms: $8.4 billion
AI Data: $3 billion

Gartner also extended its forecast to 2027, when it projects total global AI spending will surpass $3.3 trillion.
