The international humanitarian organization CARE has named Delilah Takawira as the new Country Director for its operations in Zimbabwe. The appointment marks the first time a Zimbabwean national has been selected to lead the organization’s country office since it began its work in Zimbabwe in 1992.
In a public announcement, CARE confirmed that Takawira will assume leadership responsibilities for all programs and operations within the country. She brings more than 20 years of experience in the international development and humanitarian sectors to the position.
According to information released by CARE, Takawira’s professional background includes 13 years with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). During her tenure at the FAO, she held several senior roles, including Deputy FAO Representative for both Uganda and Eswatini, where she was involved in program management, resource mobilization, and partnership development.
“I am honored to lead CARE Zimbabwe and build upon its legacy of service to Zimbabwean communities,” Takawira stated in the official announcement. “My focus will be on deepening our impact through strategic partnerships and empowering communities to achieve lasting, positive change.”
CARE officials commented on the significance of the appointment. Matthew Pickard, CARE Southern Africa’s Regional Director, noted Takawira’s qualifications for the role. “Delilah’s extensive experience in food security, resilience-building, and her deep understanding of the regional context make her exceptionally suited to lead our team in Zimbabwe,” Pickard said. He added that the appointment aligns with the organization’s global commitment to fostering local leadership.
CARE began its work in Zimbabwe in 1992 in response to a severe drought. Over the past three decades, its operations have expanded to address a range of issues. The organization’s stated areas of focus in the country include food and nutrition security, climate change adaptation, women’s economic empowerment, and access to water and sanitation. CARE reports that its programs are implemented in collaboration with local communities, civil society organizations, and government agencies.
Takawira assumes the role previously held by Patrick Sikana. Her leadership will guide the organization’s strategic direction and its response to ongoing humanitarian and development needs in Zimbabwe.
