PoliticsUN Official Details West Bank Operations, Casualties, Settlements

A United Nations official told the Security Council on Tuesday that the West Bank is at a “breaking point,” following a day of arrests and home demolitions by Israeli forces in the territory. Israeli authorities carried out operations in multiple locations, while a UN coordinator detailed statistics on casualties, displacement, and property damage in the region this year.

On Tuesday, Israeli forces arrested at least 23 Palestinians across the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Wafa news agency. The agency reported that arrests occurred in the Jenin and Bethlehem governorates, among other areas.

In the village of Tal, near Nablus, Israeli forces demolished the family home of Farouq Ramadan. Ramadan was one of four Palestinians killed during a confrontation with Israeli settlers on July 24, an incident in which two Israelis also died. Israel has a policy of demolishing homes belonging to the families of Palestinians involved in attacks on Israelis. Human rights organizations have described the policy as a form of collective punishment.

Wafa also reported other demolitions, including a home and a water well near Yatta in the Hebron governorate, which displaced nine people. Additionally, commercial and agricultural structures were reportedly bulldozed in the villages of Anza and Yarza.

Separately, incidents involving Israeli settlers were reported. Wafa stated that settlers destroyed parts of a water pipeline in Khirbet Ras al-Ahmar, affecting water supplies for 30 Palestinian families. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that six Palestinians were injured during a raid by Israeli forces in Burqa, northwest of Nablus.

During a briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Ramiz Alakbarov, the Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, stated the situation in the West Bank had reached a “breaking point.” Alakbarov presented figures compiled by the UN, reporting that Israeli forces and settlers have killed 76 Palestinians in the territory in 2026, including 18 children.

According to Alakbarov, the UN has documented over 1,430 settler attacks resulting in casualties or property damage this year. He said that since January 2023, 127 Palestinian communities have been fully or partially displaced, affecting more than 6,390 people.

The UN official also noted that Israeli authorities have advanced or approved approximately 12,360 settlement housing units across the West Bank this year. He described these developments as “interconnected steps” that are “reshaping the occupied West Bank, weakening Palestinian governance and advancing de facto annexation.”
