Adilet Party Secures Majority in Kazakhstan’s New Parliament

Kazakhstan’s electoral commission announced Monday that the Adilet party won more than 71 percent of the vote in the nation’s parliamentary election held on Sunday. The result gives the party, formed earlier this year, a majority in the newly established 145-member, single-chamber parliament, known as the Kurultai.

According to the commission, four other political parties also gained seats in the legislature: the pro-business Respublika and Ak Zhol parties, the center-left Nationwide Social Democratic Party, and the Auyl party, which focuses on rural interests.

The electoral commission reported a voter turnout of 74 percent. Approximately 12.6 million of Kazakhstan’s 20 million residents were eligible to vote in the election.

The Adilet party is led by senior aides to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and was founded in early 2026. Shortly after its formation, it absorbed Amanat, the former ruling party.

Sunday’s election was held under a new constitution adopted this year, which replaced the country’s bicameral legislature with a unicameral system. Government officials stated the constitutional change was designed to give parliament more influence in political decision-making. Last month, Kazakhstan’s Supreme Court ruled that the new constitution permits President Tokayev to run for another seven-year term.

Tokayev, a former diplomat who has led the Central Asian country since 2019, has promoted a reform agenda titled “Just Kazakhstan.” The initiative followed widespread protests in 2022 that began over living costs and resulted in events where government figures reported 238 people were killed.

Tokayev assumed the presidency as the chosen successor to Nursultan Nazarbayev, who led Kazakhstan for nearly three decades following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, from 1991 until 2019.

While casting his ballot in Astana on Sunday, Tokayev told reporters it was too early to decide whether he would seek another term. He also stated that he would name his appointee for the newly created office of vice president within the next seven to 10 days, adding that the individual would be a “well-known” person.
