Authorities have arrested seven individuals in connection with an alleged fraudulent donation operation in which they reportedly posed as charity workers to solicit funds. The group, consisting of six men and one woman, including a driver, was taken into custody following activities that spanned several months, according to local sources.
The arrests were confirmed by Sayadaw U Tay Za Thiri, the head of a local organization in Oktwin Township, located in the Bago Region of Myanmar. In a statement reported by Eleven Media, Sayadaw U Tay Za Thiri provided the number of individuals detained.
According to the report, the group used a vehicle to travel and collect money from the public under false pretenses. They allegedly presented themselves as legitimate representatives of a charitable cause to gain the trust of donors. The operation continued for an extended period before local community members and authorities were alerted to the activity, leading to the eventual arrests.
Officials have not yet released the specific charges the individuals will face or the name of the organization they claimed to represent. The identities of the seven people arrested have also not been publicly disclosed pending formal legal proceedings. The funds collected through the alleged scheme are part of an ongoing investigation by local law enforcement.
Charitable giving is a common practice throughout Myanmar, with citizens often donating to religious institutions, community projects, and relief efforts. Reports of fraudulent activities can impact public trust in legitimate organizations that rely on donations to fund their work. There has been no official statement from regional or national government bodies regarding the incident at this time. The investigation remains under the jurisdiction of local authorities in Oktwin Township.
