Pakistan Air Force Inducts Chinese HQ-17AE Air Defense System

WorldPakistan Air Force Inducts Chinese HQ-17AE Air Defense System

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on Monday announced the formal induction of the Chinese-made HQ-17AE short-range air defense (SHORAD) system into its operational inventory. The move is aimed at enhancing the country’s low-altitude air defense capabilities against modern aerial threats.

The announcement was made through a statement and a promotional video released by the PAF’s Directorate General Public Relations. The video showed a mobile HQ-17AE missile launch vehicle operating on a road with its integrated radar system actively scanning for targets, demonstrating the system’s mobility and operational readiness.

The HQ-17AE is the export version of a modern air defense system developed and manufactured by the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). It is designed as an all-weather, all-in-one system mounted on a 6×6 wheeled chassis. The vehicle integrates search and tracking radars, a fire-control system, and surface-to-air missiles into a single platform, allowing for rapid deployment and independent operation.

According to specifications provided by its manufacturer, the system is designed to intercept a variety of low- and very-low-altitude targets. These include cruise missiles, drones, tactical air-to-surface missiles, and fixed-wing aircraft. The system’s mobility is a key feature, intended to improve its survivability and allow it to provide air defense for maneuvering ground forces or protect high-value assets.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, said the induction was a part of the PAF’s ongoing modernization efforts. He stated that the addition of such systems would further strengthen Pakistan’s aerial defense capabilities.

This procurement marks another development in the long-standing defense cooperation between Pakistan and China. In recent years, Pakistan has acquired several major military platforms from Beijing, including J-10C multirole fighter jets for the air force and Type 054A/P frigates for the navy.

The enhancement of Pakistan’s air defense network occurs as nations in the region continue to update and expand their respective military inventories.
