BusinessCAA Conference in Singapore: Cocoa Sustainability & Supply Focus

The Cocoa Association of Asia (CAA) held its International Cocoa Conference on Sept. 11, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and specialists to discuss supply, sustainability, regulation, and technology in the cocoa sector. The two-day event in Singapore featured a series of panel discussions and presentations focused on challenges and opportunities facing the global industry.

The conference commenced with CAA Chairman Brandon Tay and Secretary-General Shirley R. signing a statement of support for the ASEAN One Billion Trees Growing Initiative. According to the CAA, the signing was witnessed by Cindy Khoo, Managing Director of Enterprise Singapore; Errol Levy, Deputy Head of Mission of the European Union Delegation to Singapore; and Dr. Pham Quang Minh, an Assistant Director at the ASEAN Economic Community Department. The initiative focuses on ecosystem restoration, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience in Southeast Asia.

A panel discussion moderated by Professor Annie Koh of Singapore Management University included senior executives from GCB Cocoa, Barry Callebaut Group, ofi, JB Cocoa, Mondelēz International, and Cargill. Other sessions addressed topics including cocoa supply and demand, consumer preferences, and technological applications.

A significant portion of the agenda was dedicated to new regulations. Speakers examined European Union requirements concerning deforestation, human rights risks, and due diligence systems for producers. Discussions focused on how manufacturers and farmers could adapt to changing regulatory frameworks to maintain market access.

Sustainability was another central theme, with sessions covering no-deforestation commitments, agroforestry practices, and product traceability. Michelle Cui of ECOM Agroindustrial Corp. Ltd. spoke about the need to build a cocoa industry that is “productive, resilient, sustainable and fair enough to support future generations,” according to an event summary.

The use of artificial intelligence within the cocoa value chain, from farming to trade, was also explored. The conference concluded with a gala dinner. The CAA recognized Enterprise Singapore, the Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau, and Marina Bay Sands as event supporters.
