Fed Convenes as AI Stocks Decline, Bond Yields Reach 19-Year High

BusinessFed Convenes as AI Stocks Decline, Bond Yields Reach 19-Year High

The U.S. Federal Reserve is scheduled to begin its two-day monetary policy meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026. The meeting takes place as officials consider recent economic data alongside a sell-off in technology stocks, a rise in the 10-year Treasury yield to its highest level since 2007, and crude oil prices holding above $100 per barrel.

On Monday, stocks associated with artificial intelligence experienced a downturn. The decline followed public comments from the chief executives of three major AI companies, who stated that the pace of model development should be moderated.

Amid the stock market decline, President Donald Trump commented on the technology sector. During a phone call to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who was on stage at the All-In Summit, President Trump referred to concerns regarding AI as a “hoax.” According to a video of the event shared on social media by an attendee, Trump was heard saying, “I’m telling you, it’s all a hoax.”

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose above 5% on Monday and continued to climb in early Tuesday trading, reaching a level not seen in 19 years. The increase in government debt yields reflects shifts in investor expectations regarding inflation and future central bank policy. According to market data cited by CNBC, financial markets are pricing in a high probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate increase at the conclusion of the meeting on Wednesday.

Energy markets have also seen significant price movements. Both Brent crude, the international benchmark, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures were trading above $100 per barrel. Reports have attributed the upward pressure on oil prices to recent Houthi strikes in Saudi Arabia and attacks on shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Ahead of the market opening in the United States on Tuesday, stock futures indicated a lower start to the trading session. This followed negative performance in Asian markets and expectations for a lower open in Europe. The Federal Reserve’s policy decision and subsequent statement are expected to be announced on Wednesday afternoon.
