A woman from the Mberengwa district has been sentenced by the High Court to 10 years in prison for culpable homicide. The conviction of Chipiwa Majasi, 43, is connected to the death of a one-year-and-six-month-old child following a traditional procedure she performed, according to a report from journalist Mary Taruvinga.
According to information presented during the court proceedings, Majasi, a resident of Village 3, Kugutakurima, under Chief Mposi, performed a tongue incision on the toddler using a razor blade. The child later died as a result of complications arising from the procedure.
Following an investigation into the child’s death, Majasi was formally charged with culpable homicide. The High Court, sitting in Gweru, subsequently found her guilty of the charge.
Under Zimbabwean law, culpable homicide is defined as the unlawful killing of another person through negligence, distinguishing it from a murder charge which requires proof of intent.
After the conviction, the court imposed a 10-year prison sentence on Majasi. The ruling concludes the legal proceedings related to her role in the toddler’s death. No further details regarding the specific date of the incident or the court’s detailed reasoning for the sentence length were included in the initial report.
