The Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) has released a new toolkit designed to assist local communities and civil society organizations in tracking revenue generated by Zimbabwe’s mining sector and monitoring related public spending. The guide was introduced at the recent Zimbabwe Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI).
The document, titled “Follow the Money: A Practical Guide to Understanding Mining Revenues and Public Finance,” provides a framework for users to follow financial flows from resource extraction to national and local government budgets.
According to a statement from CNRG, the initiative’s objective is to enhance transparency within the extractive industries and improve accountability in the management of public funds derived from mineral wealth. The organization stated the guide is intended to empower citizens with the information and methods needed to engage with government and corporate entities on fiscal matters.
The launch took place at the Zimbabwe Alternative Mining Indaba, an annual conference that convenes community representatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers to address issues concerning the country’s natural resource governance.
The Centre for Natural Resource Governance is a Zimbabwean research and advocacy organization that focuses on the promotion of transparent and accountable management of natural resources. The new toolkit is part of its stated mission to ensure that citizens, particularly those in resource-rich areas, benefit from the country’s mineral endowments. The guide outlines processes for accessing public financial data and understanding national budget documents, revenue collection reports, and corporate disclosures related to the mining sector.
