A fire occurred early Saturday morning at the Glenview Area 8 furniture complex, causing extensive damage to workshops and property, according to a city official. The incident, which took place on October 7, 2023, is the latest in a series of fires to affect the commercial hub.

Denford Ngadziore, chairperson for the City of Harare’s Small and Medium Enterprises Committee, confirmed the event in a statement. He reported that a significant portion of the complex was affected, destroying furniture, manufacturing equipment, and raw materials belonging to numerous small-scale business owners.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene to control the fire. Official reports have not yet stated the cause, and investigations are underway. No injuries or fatalities were reported in connection with the incident.

The Glenview Area 8 complex is a well-known center for informal furniture manufacturing and trade in Harare, providing livelihoods for hundreds of artisans and their families. The site has experienced multiple fires in previous years, leading to repeated calls from business owners for improved infrastructure and fire prevention measures.

In his statement, Ngadziore acknowledged the recurring nature of the fires at the complex. He noted the significant economic impact on the affected traders, many of whom lost their entire stock and capital equipment.

The total monetary value of the damage has not yet been officially estimated. City officials have indicated they will assess the situation and engage with the affected business community to determine the next steps.
