The governments of Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam have issued statements advising their citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance, both domestically and while traveling. The advisories were released in response to a “Worldwide Caution” security alert from the U.S. State Department concerning potential terrorist attacks by extremist groups.
The U.S. alert, updated in recent days, cited intelligence indicating that terrorist organizations continue to plan attacks in multiple regions. The State Department specified that potential targets could include tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets, and other public gathering places. The advisory noted a specific potential for attacks by ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K).
This global alert followed a more specific warning issued by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow on March 7, which stated it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts.” The Crocus City Hall attack outside Moscow occurred on March 22.
In response to the U.S. caution, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) posted a statement acknowledging the alert. The MFA advised Singaporeans to “remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, monitor local news closely and heed the advice of local authorities.” The ministry also encouraged citizens traveling abroad to e-register on its official website.
In Malaysia, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that national security forces have increased their level of alertness. Speaking to reporters, he stated that security monitoring was heightened at locations including shopping malls, places of worship, and other public areas. Separately, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry issued an advisory for its citizens traveling overseas, urging them to be cautious and to follow the advice of local authorities in their destinations.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also addressed the security situation. Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said the ministry is closely monitoring developments. According to a statement, the ministry has instructed its overseas missions to coordinate with local authorities to strengthen protection measures for Vietnamese citizens. The missions were also directed to maintain regular contact with Vietnamese communities in their respective areas.
