WorldSouth Africa: Immigration Protests Result in Violence, Looting

Protests concerning immigration in two major South African cities resulted in violence on Thursday, with police reporting that vehicles were set on fire and foreign-owned shops were looted. The events occurred in areas of Soweto, a township outside Johannesburg, and the eastern port city of Durban.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that it had dispatched officers to respond to the incidents. According to official police statements reported by news agencies, at least 24 vehicles were burned and multiple shops were damaged and looted during the demonstrations. Law enforcement officials made several arrests in connection with the events, though an exact number was not immediately released.

In Soweto, eyewitness reports and media footage showed roads blocked with burning tires and debris. Groups of protesters were seen moving through commercial areas, with some individuals forcing entry into shops. Similar scenes were reported in parts of Durban, where demonstrators also clashed with police.

The protests were organized by groups who have voiced opposition to the presence of foreign nationals, particularly from other African countries. Organizers of the demonstrations have publicly stated that they believe undocumented immigrants contribute to high unemployment rates and crime. These claims have been disputed by various civil society and migrant rights organizations.

Government officials have commented on the violence. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Police issued a statement calling for calm and asserting that lawlessness would not be tolerated. The statement affirmed the right to peaceful protest but condemned the destruction of property and theft.

Human rights groups and organizations representing immigrant communities in South Africa expressed concern over the events. In statements to the media, representatives warned that the demonstrations were fueling xenophobia and endangering the lives of foreign nationals.

The incidents on Thursday are part of a series of recent demonstrations and sporadic violence related to immigration and economic conditions in South Africa. The country experiences a high unemployment rate, which stood at 32.9% in the fourth quarter of 2023, according to Statistics South Africa. Economic grievances have, in previous instances, been a factor in tensions between South African citizens and foreign residents.

Police officials stated that they will maintain a heightened presence in the affected areas to prevent further incidents. Investigations into the property damage, looting, and public violence are ongoing.
