Yandex Suspends Vladimir Data Center Operations Post-Drone Strike

WorldYandex Suspends Vladimir Data Center Operations Post-Drone Strike

Russian technology company Yandex announced on Sunday that it suspended operations at its data center in Vladimir, a city east of Moscow, after the facility was targeted in a drone strike. In a public statement, the company confirmed that no injuries were reported and that emergency services were present at the site to assess the damage.

In a service alert posted on the messaging platform Telegram, Yandex confirmed that operations at the data center were “completely suspended.” The company advised users to activate disaster-recovery plans, noting that the platform was operating in emergency mode. Yandex also stated that the “remaining resource configuration is considered unstable” and that communications with technical support could be affected.

The incident in Vladimir marks the third reported attack on a Yandex data facility within a week. On Friday, the company, which is involved in Russia’s artificial intelligence development and is sometimes referred to as “Russia’s Google,” reported that its data center in the Kaluga region was struck by drones, causing a partial disruption.

A day earlier, a Yandex data hub in Sasovo, located southeast of Moscow, was also shut down following an attack. According to reports, the Sasovo facility houses two of the three supercomputers used for the company’s AI model development.

Following the strike in Sasovo on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on attacks against Russian infrastructure. “We always respond in mirror-like fashion,” Zelenskyy stated. “You all know, they have been hitting and continue to hit our data centres. We are responding. I can’t share all the details.”

The strikes on Yandex facilities occur amid reports of similar actions targeting Ukrainian infrastructure. Over the past month, Russian forces have conducted strikes on several Ukrainian data centers and telecommunications facilities, including targets in Kyiv. These actions have impacted connectivity and digital services within Ukraine, according to officials and news reports.
