Africa GreenCo Group announced it has secured an additional $11.5 million in funding from its current shareholders, the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) and Impact Fund Denmark (IFDK). The investment, confirmed in a recent company statement, is intended to support the organization’s renewable energy trading platform in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
This funding follows a previous investment from Sanlam Alternative Investments, a new private-sector participant that joined as a shareholder. The combined capital from these investments will be used to strengthen Africa GreenCo’s balance sheet and support its operations.
Africa GreenCo, through its operating company GreenCo Power Services, functions as an intermediary offtaker and energy trader. The company purchases power from independent power producers (IPPs) and sells it to a varied portfolio of buyers, including national utilities and large commercial and industrial consumers. The model is designed to increase private sector investment in renewable energy by acting as a creditworthy buyer, which can reduce financial risk for project developers and financiers.
PIDG is an infrastructure development and finance organization funded by six governments and the International Finance Corporation. Its mandate is to encourage private investment in infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa and south and southeast Asia. IFDK, formerly known as the Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU), is the Danish government’s development finance institution, which provides risk capital for private sector investments in developing countries.
According to Africa GreenCo, the new capital injection is a component of its broader strategy to scale its activities. The funds are earmarked for providing guarantees and operational capital needed to facilitate the development and financial close of renewable energy projects. The company aims to contribute to the growth of renewable energy capacity and enhance the stability of regional power markets.
