Alibaba Cloud Launches Generative AI Video Model Tongyi Wanxiang

BusinessAlibaba Cloud Launches Generative AI Video Model Tongyi Wanxiang

Alibaba Group’s cloud computing division announced the launch of its new generative artificial intelligence model, Tongyi Wanxiang, which is designed to create video from text and image prompts. The announcement comes as the technology company increases its focus and investment in the competitive AI sector.

In a statement, Alibaba Cloud detailed the model’s capabilities, which include generating video clips based on user-supplied text descriptions and converting still images into animated sequences. The company said the model can produce video in various artistic styles and is part of its broader suite of Tongyi generative AI models.

The release of Tongyi Wanxiang places Alibaba in a growing field of technology companies developing text-to-video AI tools. Other notable models in this area include Sora, developed by OpenAI, and Lumiere, from Google. These technologies represent a significant area of research and development across the industry, with companies aiming to create tools capable of producing high-fidelity video content from simple prompts.

This product launch occurs within the context of Alibaba’s wider corporate strategy, which has emphasized investment in cloud computing and artificial intelligence. During a recent earnings call, company executives identified both areas as core to Alibaba’s future growth.

In a separate financial development reported in February, Alibaba’s board of directors approved a $25 billion expansion of its share buyback program, extending it through the end of March 2027. A share buyback is a corporate action in which a company buys its own shares from the marketplace, which can reduce the number of outstanding shares and return capital to shareholders.

The company has publicly stated its commitment to investing in the technology and infrastructure required for AI development, which involves substantial capital for computing power and research. The introduction of the new video model is consistent with the company’s stated strategic priorities.
