BusinessAlphabet Investment, US-Iran Talks, Tech IPOs Lead Week

A series of developments in the technology sector, international diplomacy, and corporate finance emerged Monday and continued into early Tuesday trading. The events included a multi-billion dollar investment in Alphabet by Berkshire Hathaway, statements from President Donald Trump regarding nuclear negotiations with Iran, and initial public offering filings from technology companies Anthropic and SpaceX.

Technology and AI Sector News

Berkshire Hathaway disclosed a $10 billion investment in Alphabet. According to reports, the investment is part of a planned $80 billion stock sale by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, intended to fund its artificial intelligence development.

In pre-market trading Tuesday, shares of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) increased by 25%. The company attributed its higher-than-expected earnings to demand related to artificial intelligence. Separately, shares for chip designer Marvell rose more than 20% after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang commented on the company’s potential valuation.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed public sentiment regarding AI in an interview with CNBC on Monday, stating that it was reasonable for people to feel anxious. His comments coincided with the filing of a lawsuit by Florida’s attorney general against Altman and OpenAI, citing product safety concerns.

US Foreign Policy and Markets

President Donald Trump made several public statements Monday concerning negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. In a phone interview with CNBC, the president said he “couldn’t care less” if the talks were over. Later, in a post on the social media platform Truth Social, he stated that discussions with Iran “are continuing, at a rapid pace.” The president also posted about a call he had with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The statements followed reports that Iran was considering halting talks with the U.S.

On Monday, oil prices increased. The three major U.S. stock indexes also rose, closing at new highs.

Corporate Finance and Public Offerings

The artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced Monday that it had confidentially filed a prospectus with regulators for an initial public offering (IPO). The move follows reports last month that its competitor, OpenAI, was also preparing to file for an IPO.

In a separate corporate filing, SpaceX stated its intention to reserve up to 5% of its stock for sale to “certain employees and persons” during its upcoming IPO. The filing noted that the selection of these individuals would be at the discretion of the company’s executive officers.

Domestic Policy and DOJ Fund

Reports indicated the Trump administration plans to end the Department of Justice’s $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund.” Last week, a federal judge issued an order temporarily barring the Justice Department from disbursing money from the fund while a related lawsuit is adjudicated.

Following a meeting between President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told reporters the administration should terminate the fund.

McDonald’s Announces New Growth Strategy

McDonald’s Corporation announced a new global growth plan on Monday titled “McDonald’s > NEXT.” Company officials said the plan focuses on four main areas: restaurant design, food taste, consumer-led innovation, and customer service. This is the first global growth plan the company has introduced since its “Accelerating the Arches” initiative in 2020. In a memo regarding the new strategy, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski referenced the competitive nature of the restaurant industry.
