Australia and Japan Strengthen Naval Ties with Advanced Frigate Collaboration

PoliticsAustralia and Japan Strengthen Naval Ties with Advanced Frigate Collaboration

Australia and Japan agreed this week to deepen cooperation on advanced naval frigates, moving their defense partnership into new territory as both countries seek to strengthen security in the Indo-Pacific.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles and his Japanese counterpart Minoru Kihara met in Tokyo and said the time had come for closer industrial and technological collaboration. Their joint statement pointed to plans for sharing design expertise and high-tech systems in shipbuilding.

Talks focused on Japan’s Mogami-class frigate, a multi-role vessel that has attracted interest abroad. Australian officials said they were drawn to its modular design and combat systems, which could influence future Hunter-class frigates under review by the Royal Australian Navy.

Marles said joint development would not only boost naval capability but could cut costs and speed up delivery timelines. He noted Japan’s shipbuilding experience could offer “fresh perspectives” for Australia’s programs.

The push builds on recent cooperation, including a bilateral access agreement, joint exercises and intelligence-sharing. Analysts said the naval talks mark another step in expanding the two countries’ security ties.

Regional experts see the move as a response to rising maritime tensions, with disputes in the South China Sea and China’s expanding military activity shaping defense priorities.

Canberra has been upgrading its defense posture with new hardware and closer ties to allies, while Tokyo has raised its defense budget and widened its international partnerships.

No final agreement has been reached on which technologies may be integrated, but both governments framed the talks as a commitment to long-term innovation and strategic alignment.
