Australian PM: Apple CEO Praised Nation’s Online Safety Laws

PoliticsAustralian PM: Apple CEO Praised Nation's Online Safety Laws

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Sunday that Apple CEO Tim Cook described the country’s regulations on social media and online content as “world-leading.” The prime minister’s comments followed a meeting between the two leaders at Apple’s corporate headquarters in Cupertino, California.

The meeting was part of Albanese’s visit to the United States, which also included a state visit with President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C. Speaking to reporters after the discussion with Cook, Albanese reported that the conversation covered technology, investment in Australia, and the country’s regulatory framework for online safety.

“He was very positive about the world-leading role that Australia has played in online safety, something that Apple is very concerned about,” Albanese stated. The prime minister added that Cook was “very familiar” with the specifics of the Australian legislation.

Apple has not issued a public statement regarding the private meeting or confirmed the content of the discussion as described by the prime minister.

The regulations in question are primarily outlined in Australia’s Online Safety Act, which was passed in 2021. The legislation grants significant authority to an independent regulator, the eSafety Commissioner, to address harmful online content. Under the act, the commissioner can direct online service providers, including social media platforms, search engines, and messaging services, to remove material deemed abusive or illegal within 24 hours or face substantial fines.

The law covers a range of content, including cyberbullying material targeting adults and children, image-based abuse, and material depicting or promoting violent or extremist acts. The powers of the eSafety Commissioner are designed to provide a mechanism for Australians to report and seek removal of harmful content that platforms may not address voluntarily.

The discussion between Albanese and Cook occurs as governments globally continue to develop strategies for regulating digital platforms. Lawmakers in Europe, North America, and other regions are debating how to balance user safety, free expression, and corporate responsibility. Australia’s model, with its focus on a powerful, centralized regulator, is one approach being monitored internationally.

During his trip, Prime Minister Albanese also met with other business leaders to discuss investment and collaboration in technology and clean energy sectors. The government has previously stated its intent to position Australia as a leader in the global digital economy and in setting standards for a safe online environment.
