Bangladesh Forms Committee on Economic Risks from Global Instability

PoliticsBangladesh Forms Committee on Economic Risks from Global Instability

The government of Bangladesh has formed a high-level committee to develop a crisis management plan aimed at protecting the country’s economy from the effects of global conflicts and supply chain disruptions. The move, confirmed through a government circular, tasks the panel with identifying economic vulnerabilities and proposing measures to ensure stability in key sectors.

The committee, led by the Cabinet Secretary, includes senior officials from several key ministries, including Finance, Commerce, Agriculture, and Energy. Its primary mandate is to monitor the international economic situation and analyze its potential impact on Bangladesh. This includes tracking global commodity prices, particularly for fuel, food staples, and industrial raw materials.

According to government documents, the panel will assess the country’s import dependencies and export markets. It is tasked with recommending short- and long-term policy actions to mitigate risks associated with price volatility and logistical challenges in international trade. The formation of the committee follows official reports detailing economic pressures facing the nation.

The decision is set against a backdrop of rising inflation and pressure on the country’s foreign currency reserves. Data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics has shown a persistent upward trend in the consumer price index over the past year. Simultaneously, figures from Bangladesh Bank, the country’s central bank, indicate a decline in foreign reserves, which are used to pay for essential imports.

Officials have cited the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a significant factor contributing to global economic uncertainty. Statements from government representatives have noted the conflict’s effect on international markets for energy, grain, and fertilizer, all of which are critical imports for Bangladesh.

The committee’s scope includes formulating strategies to ensure food and energy security. This involves exploring alternative sourcing for essential goods and developing plans to manage domestic supplies and prices. Another area of focus is the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, which is the country’s largest export sector and is heavily reliant on consumer demand in North America and Europe.

The panel is expected to submit its findings and initial recommendations to the Prime Minister’s Office. The government has not specified a public timeline for the committee’s report.
