Cambodia-Thailand Trade Stays Resilient Despite Border Tensions, Experts Say

BusinessCambodia-Thailand Trade Stays Resilient Despite Border Tensions, Experts Say

Phnom Penh – In the face of simmering tensions along their shared border, Cambodia and Thailand are sending a strong signal to the region: economics and diplomacy still come first. Trade between the two neighboring nations remains intact and continues to grow, defying the odds amid political friction.

According to government data, bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand hit $4.29 billion in 2024, a significant 15.5% increase compared to the previous year. Though Cambodia continues to run a trade deficit—exporting $844.9 million worth of goods while importing $3.44 billion—both governments appear committed to maintaining a productive economic relationship.

Border Disputes, But Business as Usual
Tensions at the border have made headlines recently, raising fears of a potential escalation. But on the economic front, experts and business leaders are urging calm, pointing out that no trade sanctions or boycotts have been implemented, and both sides continue to engage diplomatically.

Lor Vichet, vice president of the Cambodia Chinese Commerce Association, remains optimistic. “Trade isn’t being politicized here,” he told reporters. “Neither side has moved to block products or cut ties, which suggests a shared understanding that economic cooperation must remain separate from political disagreements.”

Vichet also noted that Cambodia’s liberal investment climate, which allows full foreign ownership and unrestricted profit repatriation, remains a key attraction for Thai businesses.

A Delicate Balancing Act
Still, the dispute has prompted high-level voices to call for a long-term solution. Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, a seasoned statesman known for his candid remarks, called on both countries to seek legal arbitration to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

“If we don’t let the court decide, this issue could drag on for generations, like the conflict in Gaza,” Hun Sen warned, drawing a sobering comparison to the decades-long Middle East crisis. His statement underscores the urgency of peaceful resolution through international law—specifically, via the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Trade Numbers Show Steady Growth
Despite the geopolitical concerns, the trade data tells a story of resilience. In just the first four months of 2025, total trade between the two countries reached $1.49 billion, up 6.4% from last year. While Cambodian exports dipped slightly by 2.9%, imports from Thailand rose 9.4%, suggesting robust consumer demand and stable trade channels.

Cambodian business owners remain cautiously hopeful. Sokha Phan, who runs a logistics company in Banteay Meanchey province near the Thai border, said her trucks continue to cross with minimal disruption.

“There’s tension, yes, but we’re still moving goods. The customs officers on both sides have been professional,” she shared. “As long as people talk instead of fight, business will survive.”

Tourism and Regional Peace Also at Stake
While trade has been shielded from political tensions, experts warn that prolonged uncertainty could eventually impact tourism and cross-border labor sectors. Both countries rely on each other for goods, shared economic zones, and workforce mobility, especially in border provinces.

Regional analysts emphasize that keeping trade channels open is about more than economics—it’s about preserving peace and people’s livelihoods.

A Pragmatic Partnership
As Cambodia and Thailand navigate this sensitive period, their ability to separate diplomacy from economic engagement will likely determine the long-term health of their relationship. The message is clear for now: even amid disagreement, commerce continues, and cooperation remains the preferred path forward.

This moment could serve as a blueprint for other regional disputes—proving that nations can choose dialogue over division even when political tempers flare.
