PoliticsCanada, Indonesia Officials Discuss Bilateral Ties in Jakarta

Representatives from IN Diplomacy magazine met with officials from the Embassy of Canada in Jakarta on Oct. 9, 2026, to discuss bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest between the two nations. The discussion covered topics including trade, sustainability, education, and potential media engagement, according to a statement from the magazine.

The meeting was attended by IN Diplomacy’s Editor-in-Chief, Nomita Dhar, along with team members Alma Amarthatia and Rezkia Maghriby Yoandra. They met with undisclosed representatives from the Canadian Embassy to review Canada’s current engagement in Indonesia.

The discussion on trade relations occurs as both countries continue negotiations for the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA). Formal negotiations for this agreement were launched in June 2021. According to Global Affairs Canada, the objective of the ICA-CEPA is to secure improved market access for goods, services, and investment, aiming to create a more predictable trade environment for businesses in both countries. In 2023, bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Indonesia totaled $6.2 billion, as reported by the same government body.

Education was also a key topic on the agenda. Canada is a destination for Indonesian students pursuing post-secondary education. Data from the Indonesian government shows a consistent interest in Canadian academic institutions, reflecting ongoing educational ties.

The meeting also addressed sustainability, a field where Canada has supported various initiatives in Indonesia. Canadian international development programs have previously focused on environmental governance, climate change resilience, and sustainable economic growth in the region.

The final point of discussion involved exploring opportunities for future media engagement, which aligns with IN Diplomacy’s focus on international relations and the diplomatic corps in Indonesia. No specific outcomes or future actions resulting from the meeting have been publicly announced.
