Civilian Casualties Reported in Russia-Ukraine Weekend Strikes

WorldCivilian Casualties Reported in Russia-Ukraine Weekend Strikes

Officials in Ukraine and Russia have reported multiple civilian casualties resulting from aerial strikes over the weekend. Russian attacks across several Ukrainian regions resulted in at least six deaths and numerous injuries, according to Ukrainian authorities, while Russian officials said a Ukrainian drone strike killed two children in southern Russia.

The reports of casualties came on Saturday, a day after a strike on a shopping complex in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine.

In the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that a Russian ballistic missile attack caused a warehouse fire in the Darnytskyi district, resulting in one death.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, the Kherson regional military administration reported that Russian strikes damaged homes and apartment buildings, killing three people and injuring 13. In the eastern Donetsk region, one person was killed and seven were wounded, regional governor Vadym Filashkin said, according to local media.

In the northern Sumy region, regional officials reported that a Russian drone strike on a house killed one man. Six other people were reportedly injured in separate drone attacks across the region. A drone strike was also reported in the city of Kherson, which caused a fire at a shopping center. No casualties were reported in that incident.

Separately, Russian authorities in the southern Krasnodar region reported that a Ukrainian drone struck a house, killing two children and injuring two adults.

These events followed a major strike on Friday afternoon in Kryvyi Rih, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown. Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s Defense Council, said Russian forces used Shahed drones to attack the Sunny Gallery shopping complex. According to Vilkul, a second wave of drones arrived approximately 30 minutes after the first, as emergency crews were responding to the scene.

On Saturday morning, Dnipropetrovsk regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha provided an update, confirming the death toll from the Kryvyi Rih attack had risen to 16, with more than 130 people wounded, including 22 children.

President Zelenskyy addressed the Kryvyi Rih attack in a post on the social media platform Telegram.

“Attacks like these are nothing less than terrorist acts,” Zelenskyy wrote. He described the strike as “absolutely cynical and despicable” and an “act of barbarism.”

Rescue operations continued at the site of the shopping complex throughout the weekend. The strikes occurred as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.
