A new report by the Joint Economic Committee’s minority staff says prices on key baby items rose significantly following President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement in April 2025.
According to the report, the combined price of five common baby products — car seats, bassinets, strollers, high chairs, and baby monitors — increased by 24%, or $98, between April 1 and June 9. The committee’s analysis used price tracking data from Babylist, a baby registry site.
“New parents already have their budgets stretched thin by all the products that they have to buy for their child – the last thing they need is a new tax on babies created by President Trump,” said Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., ranking member of the committee.
The pricing review focused on best-selling Amazon products from brands such as Graco, AirClub, Summer by Ingenuity, Evenflo, and HelloBaby, using third-party tools Keepa.com and Camelcamelcamel.com to track changes over time.
Among the five items analyzed, the Graco SnugRide Lite LX Infant Car Seat showed the steepest increase at 44.8%. A spokesperson for Newell Brands, which owns Graco, said the baseline price reflected a temporary promotion and that the actual post-sale increase was closer to $20, not $43.
Newell executives said on an April 30, 2024, earnings call that they raised prices on baby gear by about 20% to offset the impact of tariffs.
A separate Babylist analysis covering 11 product categories estimated a total added cost of $875.2 million for U.S. households from March to June 2024. California parents faced the largest share of the increase, at $100.3 million, followed by Texas, Florida, and New York.
“Just in the last two months, the tariffs have made things even more difficult for new parents,” Hassan said.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
