Finland’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury, met with Nomita Dhar, Editor-in-Chief of IN Diplomacy magazine, at the Finnish Embassy in Jakarta to discuss key areas of cooperation between the two nations. The discussion centered on topics including sustainability, education, technology, and innovation, according to a report from the publication.
The meeting was also attended by Fildzah Arifin, the embassy’s Event and Communications Coordinator, along with IN Diplomacy staff members Alma Amarthatia and Rezkia Maghriby Yoandra. The dialogue served as an exchange on the state of Indonesia-Finland diplomatic and economic ties.
Bilateral relations between Finland and Indonesia were formally established in 1954. Cooperation has since developed in several key sectors, often aligning with areas of Finnish technical expertise. According to Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the relationship focuses on commercial and economic partnerships, particularly in energy, digitalization, and the circular economy.
One of the primary areas of collaboration is sustainable development. Finland has partnered with Indonesia on initiatives related to sustainable forest management and the development of renewable energy sources. This aligns with Indonesia’s policy goals for reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy.
Education remains another significant pillar of the bilateral relationship. The Finnish education system is a subject of global interest, and the two countries have engaged in programs involving teacher training and vocational education development. These initiatives aim to foster knowledge exchange and capacity building within Indonesia’s education sector.
In technology and innovation, discussions have often revolved around digitalization and smart city solutions. Finnish technology companies have participated in trade missions and forums in Indonesia, exploring opportunities within the country’s rapidly growing digital economy.
Economic ties are reflected in trade data from government sources. According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade, primary exports to Finland include rubber, footwear, and furniture, while key imports from Finland consist of machinery, paper products, and chemical goods.
The meeting between the embassy and the Jakarta-based diplomatic publication highlights the ongoing dialogue concerning these areas of mutual interest. Ambassador Suomela-Chowdhury served as Finland’s appointed envoy to Indonesia from 2021 until mid-2023.
