Four people were killed and 12 others were injured on Saturday after a commuter omnibus crashed along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the details of the single-vehicle accident, which occurred when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn.
In a statement confirming the incident, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi provided the official death and injury toll. The names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of their families. The 12 injured passengers were transported to local medical facilities for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately detailed in the police report.
The accident took place on a major transport artery that connects Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, with the tourist destination of Victoria Falls. Commuter omnibuses, locally known as “kombis,” are a common form of public transportation for both short and long-distance travel throughout the country.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the precise cause of the crash. The ZRP’s traffic division is examining the circumstances that led to the driver losing control of the vehicle.
This incident occurs within the context of national road safety concerns. According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), road traffic accidents are a significant cause of death and injury in the nation. The organization’s data indicates that a high percentage of accidents are attributed to human error, including speeding, driver inattention, and vehicle defects.
Government agencies and safety bodies have previously identified major highways as areas requiring increased safety monitoring. The ZRP frequently conducts enforcement campaigns aimed at improving driver behavior and ensuring vehicle roadworthiness. No further information was available regarding the condition of the vehicle involved in Saturday’s crash.
Police officials have stated their investigation is ongoing and that more information will be released as it becomes available.
