WorldGaza: Infant Dies From Cold, Six Rescued From Collapsed Home

Officials in the Gaza Strip reported the death of an infant due to cold weather on Dec. 17, while a separate incident in Gaza City saw six people rescued from a partially collapsed home. The events occurred as winter weather affected the region.

Gaza’s Health Ministry announced that a two-week-old infant died from exposure to the cold. The ministry’s statement attributed the death to freezing temperatures. No further details were provided regarding the circumstances of the infant’s death.

In a separate event in the Shati refugee camp, rescue workers retrieved six people, including two children, after the roof of their family home collapsed. According to a report from Al Jazeera, the collapse happened during a storm. The report described the home as having been previously damaged during the conflict.

The rescue operation was conducted by local emergency responders who extracted the family members from the damaged structure. The condition of those rescued was not immediately detailed in the report.

These incidents take place amid warnings from international aid organizations about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. United Nations agencies and other groups have repeatedly cited concerns over inadequate shelter, food, and medical supplies for the population, particularly with the onset of winter weather conditions. Official reports from humanitarian groups describe many displaced residents living in tents or damaged buildings that offer limited protection from the elements.
