Hasbro Inc. on Tuesday announced it forecasts a decline in annual revenue for the upcoming fiscal year, a projection that falls below analyst expectations. The toy and entertainment company attributed the guidance to anticipated reductions in consumer spending on non-essential items amid prevailing economic conditions.
In its fourth-quarter earnings report, the Pawtucket-based company projected that its full-year revenue would decrease by a low-single-digit percentage. This contrasts with market estimates, which, according to data from financial market analysts, had anticipated a smaller decline.
Following the announcement, the company’s shares experienced a drop in morning trading.
Hasbro’s Consumer Products segment, which includes brands such as Nerf, Play-Doh, and My Little Pony, has faced challenges as retailers adjust their inventory levels. Company officials noted that consumer demand softened more than anticipated during the holiday season, a critical period for the toy industry.
In a statement accompanying the financial results, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks addressed the consumer environment. “The consumer is going to be looking for value,” Cocks stated, adding that shoppers are expected to be “more discerning on their purchases.”
The company reported that its “Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming” division, responsible for popular franchises like Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, continued to show revenue growth. This performance provided a partial offset to declines in other areas of the business.
In response to the financial headwinds, Hasbro outlined a cost-reduction strategy. The company is proceeding with a plan, announced late last year, to cut approximately $250 million to $300 million in annual costs by the end of 2025. This initiative includes a reduction of its global workforce by about 15%, a move announced earlier in the year.
The forecast from Hasbro reflects a broader trend within the retail sector, where companies dealing in discretionary goods have reported shifts in consumer spending habits. Competitor Mattel Inc. also recently noted the impact of inflation on consumer demand for its products. Hasbro executives stated they are focusing on managing inventory and prioritizing investment in their core brands to navigate the current economic landscape.
