HSBC Reports $10.1 Billion Q2 Pre-Tax Profit, Exceeds Estimates

BusinessHSBC Reports $10.1 Billion Q2 Pre-Tax Profit, Exceeds Estimates

HSBC on Tuesday announced a second-quarter pre-tax profit of $10.1 billion, a figure that surpassed analyst expectations. The bank attributed the result to an increase in net interest income and fees, as well as a net favorable impact from notable items.

In a statement released on Aug. 4, 2026, the London-based financial institution reported that its profit before tax for the three-month period rose 60% from the $6.33 billion recorded in the same quarter a year earlier. The bank’s revenue for the quarter increased 16% year-on-year to $19.1 billion.

The results exceeded the consensus estimates compiled by the bank, which had projected a pre-tax profit of $9.51 billion on revenue of $18.57 billion.

According to the company’s financial filing, the quarterly profit was influenced by a net favorable impact from notable items totaling $2.6 billion. Revenue figures included a one-off gain of $1.3 billion from these items. The bank also noted that its operating expenses fell by 2%, citing lower restructuring costs.

Net interest income, a core measure of banking profitability, rose 9% year-on-year to $9.29 billion in the second quarter. HSBC confirmed it is maintaining its targeted return on tangible equity (RoTE) at 17%. The annualized RoTE for the quarter, excluding certain items, was 19.1%.

Concurrent with the earnings announcement, the HSBC board approved a second interim dividend of 10 cents per share for investors. The company also disclosed plans to initiate a share buyback program of up to $1 billion. HSBC stated it expects the buyback to be completed by the time it announces its third-quarter results.
